The flutes

Provence cane flutes

Provence cane is the giant reed of the Midi, used to make flutes since Antiquity. It is the lightest material in the workshop — and the most natural.

Its voice is soft, airy, with little low end: an intimate sound, suited to meditative playing, to children's hands and to walking. Its resonance is shorter and more direct, less enveloping than noble wood.

In exchange for that lightness, cane is fragile: it dislikes knocks, humidity and temperature swings. It is a living material that keeps the trace of the reed it came from.
