The flutes

Native American flutes in bamboo

Bamboo is the most direct material: a hollow stem, a breath that answers at once, a weight that never tires the hands.

Its thin wall gives a clear timbre, a crisp attack and an immediate response. This is the flute you take with you — by the water, on a walk, in a bag — and the one that forgives a beginner most.

Bamboo remains a plant material: it dislikes cold, knocks and humidity more than noble wood does. In return it costs noticeably less, and most of the workshop's first flutes are made of it.
